We had our first MODUL vegetation survey last week at Camposoto. Over the course of 3 days, we sampled coastal vegetation in detail to ground truth our satellite image analyses. Camposoto is a barrier system encompassing bare sand, semi-mobile dunes, fixed dunes and marsh environments, with large changes to landforms and ecosystems in short distances.

Example of coastal environments in the Camposoto Barrier system.

We measured various important variables including species ID, distribution, density and variations in vegetation cover.

The work will be instrumental in understanding vegetation patterns and the response of plant species to environmental factors.

We used common vegetation sampling techniques supported by DGPS topographic surveying.

We are grateful to the staff at Natural Park Bahía de Cádiz for their support, and extend our appreciation to all the students who participated in our inaugural vegetation survey.

Thanks to all who contributed!
