MODUL recently collaborated on the Coastal Risks Workshop ('Jornadas en Riesgos Costeros'), co-organizing the conference in conjunction with GIAL, the MSc program on Integrated Coastal Management by the University of Cadiz.

The conference took place on 10th November 2023, featuring a panel of experts in coastal processes and management. Dr. Luciana Esteves from Bournemouth University provided cutting-edge insights into Nature-Based Solutions for coastal risks as the keynote speaker. Dr. Emilia Guisado-Pintado from Universidad de Sevilla shared recent research on the Island of Barbuda's large-scale response to Hurricane Irma.

Dr. Susana Costas, from Universidade do Algarve, presented a thought-provoking approach to understanding and applying concepts related to coastal resilience. The workshop concluded with Dr. Irene Delgado-Fernandez from Universidad de Cádiz, who discussed ongoing research concerning coastal dune responses to high-magnitude marine events.

Each presentation fostered engaging questions from a diverse audience composed of students, practitioners, policymakers, and academics. The forum provided an opportunity to discuss new ideas and their practical applications to the context of coastal risks.

Complementing the Workshop, MODUL organized a field trip for visiting conference speakers on the day before (November 9th). Colleagues from the UK and Portugal had the opportunity to explore two of MODUL’s research sites: Bolonia and Valdevaqueros. This excursion facilitated networking and offered a hands-on opportunity to delve deeper into the practical aspects of MODUL and the themes covered during the Coastal Risks Workshop.
